Kurash History

History of Kurash Sport in Himachal Pradesh
Introduction to Kurash
Kurash is a traditional martial art and wrestling style that originated in Central Asia over 3,500 years ago. Known for its upright throwing techniques and sportsmanship, it has been recognized in the Asian Games since 2006, and features in School National Games, Asian Games, World Championships, and Asian Championships under the International Kurash Association (IKA)
Beginning of Kurash in Himachal Pradesh
• Founder: Kurash was formally introduced in Himachal Pradesh by Sh. Virender Singh Dhaulta, internationally certified Kurash coach & referee in kurash from physical education Univercity teshkent Uzbekistan . 
• Formation of Association: The Himachal Pradesh Amateur Association of Kurash (R) was established in 2018 by Virender Singh Dhaulta under the Himachal Pradesh Societies Registration Act, 2006.
• Affiliation: The association is affiliated with the Indian Kurash Association, the only internationally registered Kurash association in India recognized by the International Kurash Association (IKA).
Growth and Expansion in Himachal Pradesh
• Initially, Kurash coaching was provided in Solan at Thodo Ground without proper infrastructure, relying solely on voluntary efforts.
• Over time, the sport expanded, and district associations in Shimla, Solan, Mandi, Kullu, Kinnaur, and Bilaspur were also registered under the Himachal Pradesh Societies Registration Act, 2006.
• Kurash has now reached schools, colleges, and local sports academies, creating a strong grassroots base.
Key Achievements
1. School National Games & State Medals
• Himachal Pradesh players have been regularly participating in School National Games since Kurash was introduced in the state.
• In 2025, HP won 10 medals in a single event — the highest ever for the state in Kurash history.
• 3 School National Games medals in 2025 at Raipur.
3. International Level Representation
• 2025: Virender Singh Dhaulta appointed Coach of the Indian Team at the 14th Asian Kurash Championship in South Korea.
• Shourya Singh Yadav from GBSSS Sundernagar became the first Himachali to win a medal (Bronze) at the Asian Kurash Championship.
Current Status
• Kurash in Himachal Pradesh is recognized at national and international levels through affiliation with the Indian Kurash Association.
• Representation achieved in School Nationals, Asian Games, World Championships, and Asian Championships.
• The sport continues to grow through the Himachal Pradesh Amateur Association of Kurash (R) and its district bodies.
Vision for the Future
• Establishing state-level training centres with proper mats, lighting, diet, and residential facilities.
• Targeting Asian Games and World Championship medals from Himachal Pradesh athletes.
